The answer is yes hypnosis is safe if you see an accredited qualified clinical hypnotherapist.
What you need to understand about hypnotherapy is that it’s not regulated. And what that means is that you yourself could call yourself a hypnotherapist, hang up your shingle tomorrow without any training.
So you do need to make sure that your hypnotherapist has the right training. So the first thing you need to do is go to their website, and go to the about page and have a look at their qualifications.
And once you have their qualifications go to a website called training.gov.au and enter the organisation where they did their training.
Now if it’s not a registered training organization with the government I would not go and see them. You do need to see someone who has the right qualifications. It’s really easy to hypnotize someone but it’s what you do when they’re under that’s the most important thing, and you need to have a skilled hypnotherapist in order to achieve that.
When you call a hypnotherapist and ask about what she does, you need to ask a couple of really important questions: number one, where did she do her training (and that’s really important as I mentioned before), but secondly as her how long she’s been in business.
If she’s been in business for a number of years she'[s probably doing something right which means she’s probably pretty good at what she does.
So they’re the things you need to ask when you call a hypnotherapist.
You also need to consider whether hypnosis is actually a safe modality for you personally. For example I would not treat someone who has a history of grand mal epilepsy if it’s untreated or unmedicated. I also wouldn’t treat someone who has schizophrenia.
So if you’re in doubt about whether hypnosis is right for you, the first thing you need to do is consult your doctor and mare sure that it is safe for you.
But generally for most of the population hypnosis is a safe and effective modality – but do your research and do your homework before you book in with someone.
